A fixed orthodontic appliance or a fixed prosthesis, as it is commonly called, is a tool for straightening the jaws and teeth that, producing a slight force, moves them in the desired direction.
With these appliances, the correct relationship between the jaws is achieved, the optimal shape of the dental rows is established, as well as the ideal arrangement and position of the teeth in them (alignment of the teeth).
Jaw and teeth problems that can be solved with a fixed prosthesis
In jaworthopedics, the following irregularities of teeth and jaws in children and adults are diagnosed and treated:
improper bite;
irregularity of the arrangement and position of the teeth.
Fixed prosthesis Herceg Novi – Is there an age limit for wearing it?
Correction of the position of the jaws and teeth is carried out using mobile and fixed orthodontic appliances. Mobile orthodontic appliances (mobile prostheses) are intended for younger children. Fixed prostheses are mainly reserved for adolescents, i.e. patients older than 18 years, whose skeletal development has been completed.
In addition to children, fixed prostheses can be worn by adolescents and adults.
Unlike mobile prosthetic appliances, which are worn for several hours a day and towards the end of therapy only at night, fixed prosthesis Herceg Novi is worn continuously. However, for this very reason, results are achieved faster. The usual wearing period is 2–6 years, with most about 2,5 years.
The fact that there is no age limit for wearing a fixed prosthesis seems very encouraging to many. This means that irregularities of the jaws and teeth that were neglected in childhood for any reason can be easily corrected by a teenager or an adult. In this way, in addition to correcting the occlusion, a high aesthetic smile is achieved, which undoubtedly contributes to self-confidence.

We distinguish fixed orthodontic appliances in relation to the material from which they are made. Therefore, they are grouped into:
metal braces;
aesthetic braces;
self-ligating braces;
lingual braces.
Metal braces are cast from stainless steel, connected with a metal arch and glued to the tooth enamel using a special glue. Rubber bands are placed on them, which can be in different colors, which is very attractive to younger patients.
The aesthetic braces that are applied at the Dr. Veselinović Dental Clinic are made of sapphire glass and are completely transparent. Many patients express the wish that the fixed appliance they wear on their teeth is not visible. This type of braces allows them to do that and relieves them so that they can smile with confidence even during therapy.
Self-ligating brackets are highly technologically advanced metal or aesthetic brackets that reduce friction and create mild forces. They are made of metal clasps without elastics.
With this brace system:
therapy takes less time;
it is comfortable for the patient;
the need for tooth extraction is reduced;
maintenance of oral hygiene is easier;
control examinations last less;
controls are scheduled at longer time intervals.
Lingual braces are a special system of braces that are attached to the inside of the teeth. Thus, when smiling, it is not visible that the patient has them on his teeth.
Materials from which fixed prostheses are made
Fixed orthodontic appliances made of different materials are represented in modern dentistry. The traditional Herceg Novi fixed prosthesis is made of steel, which is sometimes combined with nickel-titanium.
Lingual braces or aesthetic prostheses, which are placed on the inside of the teeth, are made of ceramic, sapphire glass or composite materials with metal slots. This makes it possible to match their color with the color of the teeth.
How to maintain prosthesis hygiene?
Oral hygiene should be increased when wearing fixed dentures because food is more likely to be retained behind braces, elastics and wires. This increases the risk of carious lesions.
Patients with fixed prosthesis must include interdental brushes in their daily oral and dental hygiene routine. They should also use dental floss intended for jaws with fixed dentures.
Fixed prosthesis Herceg Novi – Orthodontic therapy at Dr. Veselinović Dental Clinic
According to the age of the child and the type of diagnosed problem, our jaw orthopedic specialists determine the most appropriate therapeutic method.
It is known that orthodontic therapy with a fixed appliance is one of the most effective ways of correcting improper tooth position and bite, i.e. establishing the optimal form of dental rows.
Our little patient was diagnosed with canines in a high position, as well as a gap between the central incisors (lat. diastema mediana). Orthodontic therapy with a fixed prosthesis lasted 12 months, and the photos show the condition BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER it. After the end of the therapeutic period, the patient wore retention foils in both jaws in order to preserve the results. Retention, by the way, is mandatory after wearing a fixed prosthesis.
As already mentioned, unlike mobile prostheses, which are worn in early childhood, fixed prostheses can be worn by adolescents and adults. In order for the result to be faster, it is recommended to start the therapy at a younger age, i.e. while jaw development continues.
Considering that irregularities of the jaws and teeth can be the cause of other problems (caries, periodontitis, disorders of the jaw joint, etc.), it is best to consult an orthodontist and, if necessary, start therapy as soon as possible.
Dental clinic Dr. Veselinović offers its patients different types of mobile and fixed orthodontic appliances. At the specialist examination, the method that best suits the diagnosed problem, as well as the patient’s wishes, will be proposed.
