Excessive gum recession and exposure of the root surface of one or more teeth cause increased root sensitivity to external stimuli.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In addition, it has a significant negative impact on the appearance of the smile and, if left untreated, may eventually lead to tooth loss. Although gingival recession is a complex condition, it is treatable. In advanced cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/dental-interventions\/oral-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>surgical intervention<\/strong><\/a> is the only effective solution.<\/p>\n<p>In the following sections, we will explain the surgical treatment of <strong>gingival recession<\/strong> and illustrate the procedure with photographs from our dental clinic.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_gingival_recession_develop_and_what_are_its_symptoms\"><\/span>How does gingival recession develop and what are its symptoms?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Gingival recession<\/strong> is a common condition \u2013 affecting as many as 88% of people over the age of 65. The causes of excessive gum recession may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improper oral hygiene (aggressive brushing or inadequate oral care leading to plaque and tartar accumulation);<\/li>\n<li>congenital anatomical factors (e.g., alveolar bone deformities);<\/li>\n<li>genetic predisposition;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/dental-interventions\/periodontology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>periodontal disease<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>gum injuries or trauma;<\/li>\n<li>abnormal tooth position;<\/li>\n<li>lip and\/or tongue <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Body_piercing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>piercings<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>systemic diseases (diabetes, hormonal imbalance, HIV);<\/li>\n<li>certain medications;<\/li>\n<li>harmful lifestyle habits (smoking, drug use), and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When it comes to the signs and symptoms of <strong>gingival recession<\/strong>, patients most commonly report that their teeth appear \u201elonger\u02ee or larger than before. They also notice increased tooth sensitivity, sometimes experiencing pain even when breathing in cold air. This is a reliable surgical method commonly used for the treatment of multiple <strong>gingival recessions<\/strong>. Combined with an autogenous connective tissue graft and a collagen matrix for tissue regeneration, this approach provides outstanding clinical and aesthetic results.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Case_description_%E2%80%93_Connective_tissue_graft\"><\/span>Case description \u2013 Connective tissue graft<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The first step of the procedure involved harvesting a subepithelial <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autotransplantation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>connective tissue graft<\/strong><\/a> (SCTG) from the patient&#8217;s palate.<\/p>\n<p>Photo 1 shows the donor site, where a partial-thickness connective tissue graft, without the epithelial layer, was obtained from the palatal mucosa.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2990\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2990 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-2.jpg\" alt=\"gingival recession dr veselinovic 2\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Dr. Veselinovi\u0107 Dental clinic \u2013 Donor site, soft tissue harvesting, and graft preparation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Figure 2 shows the donor site after tissue harvesting, while Figure 3 presents the prepared graft ready for placement.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mucogingival_surgical_procedure\"><\/span>Mucogingival surgical procedure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The second phase of the treatment consisted of placing and suturing the connective tissue graft into the prepared recipient site (Figures 1 and 2).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2991\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2991\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2991 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-3.jpg\" alt=\"gingival recession dr veselinovic 3\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-3.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gingival-recession-dr-veselinovic-3-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Dr. Veselinovi\u0107 Dental clinic, gingival recession \u2013 Surgical procedure and postoperative condition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the procedure, two surgical wounds were present\u2014one at the palate (donor site) and one at the recession site (recipient site). Both healed simultaneously and relatively quickly.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gingival_recession_%E2%80%93_Postoperative_recovery_and_results\"><\/span>Gingival recession \u2013 Postoperative recovery and results<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Figure 3 in the collage above shows the condition after 7 days, while Figures 4 and 5 demonstrate complete healing of the gingival tissue six weeks after surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Although the postoperative healing period may seem lengthy, there is no reason for concern. For this reason, it should never be ignored.
