These may include:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sports games and matches;<\/li>\n<li>riding scooters, roller skates, skateboards, and bicycles;<\/li>\n<li>traffic accidents;<\/li>\n<li>falls;<\/li>\n<li>blows from blunt objects;<\/li>\n<li>physical fights;<\/li>\n<li>hard food and objects;<\/li>\n<li>age;<\/li>\n<li>diseases, and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All acute dental traumas have one thing in common: they are accompanied by bleeding and pain.<\/p>\n<p>These occurrences usually cause a high level of distress and fear in the injured person, or in the parents (if a <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/dental-interventions\/childrens-and-preventive-dentistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>child<\/strong><\/a> has been injured).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>However, it is of the utmost importance to remain calm in such a situation, act promptly, and provide appropriate care for the injured person.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<pre>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/do-you-know-what-an-apicoectomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Do you know what an apicoectomy is? &gt;&gt;<\/strong><\/a><\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_of_dental_injuries_and_basic_classification\"><\/span>Causes of dental injuries and basic classification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>All <strong>dental injuries<\/strong> can be divided into two main groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>traumatic;<\/li>\n<li>atraumatic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Traumatic_dental_injuries\"><\/span>Traumatic dental injuries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Traumatic dental injuries<\/strong> (teeth and periodontal tissues) always occur suddenly as a result of an accident. Therefore, children are more susceptible (especially boys), but adults are not completely excluded either. Those with orthodontic anomalies (for example, protruding, displaced incisors) or extensive carious lesions are particularly predisposed to these injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Sports activities (martial arts and other contact sports, rugby, and similar activities) carry the highest risk of injury in general, and especially of injuries to the teeth and jaws. However, legal regulations regarding the rules of its use have not been precisely defined. Therefore, accidents caused by collisions between scooter riders and pedestrians, cars, buses, and various obstacles are frequent.<\/p>\n<p>During collisions and falls, injuries most often affect the extremities and\/or maxillofacial structures (the face, head, and neck). Teeth and jaws almost regularly suffer injuries in such situations.<\/p>\n<p>The specialists at <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/about-us-dr-veselinovic-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Dr Veselinovi\u0107<\/em> Dental clinic<\/strong><\/a> frequently encounter such injuries, mostly among younger patients aged 10\u201314 years. What they all have in common is that they ride scooters without protective equipment (helmets and chin guards).<\/p>\n<p>It is also important to point out that such injuries represent a major burden on the healthcare system, as well as on the finances of the injured person.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Therefore, preventive measures are always a better solution than specialized treatment in dental and other medical offices.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_other_causes_of_traumatic_dental_injuries\"><\/span>What are other causes of traumatic dental injuries?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Dental trauma can also occur in a traffic accident, after a fall from a height, as a result of a physical fight, or due to a blow from a blunt object.<\/p>\n<p>Biting very hard food or objects (almonds, bones, fruit pits, ice, bottle caps, and similar items) can also represent a traumatic factor.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Atraumatic_dental_injuries\"><\/span>Atraumatic dental injuries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to <strong>atraumatic dental injuries<\/strong>, they are usually indirect and caused by various diseases and conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>tooth decay;<\/li>\n<li>gangrene;<\/li>\n<li>pulpitis (inflammation of the dental nerve);<\/li>\n<li>gingivitis (inflammation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>gingiva<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/periodontitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>periodontitis<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>bruxism;<\/li>\n<li>cancer;<\/li>\n<li>diabetes;<\/li>\n<li>aging;<\/li>\n<li>medications;<\/li>\n<li>narcotics, and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bruxism (involuntary teeth grinding) is a potential cause of cracks or fractures of the dental crown and requires treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In all of the above-mentioned cases, a visit to an <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/our-team\/dr-ilija-veselinovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>oral surgeon<\/strong><\/a> is essential.<\/p>\n<pre>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/what-is-surgical-exposure-of-impacted-teeth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>What is surgical exposure of an impacted teeth? &gt;&gt;<\/strong><\/a><\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Manifestations_of_dental_injuries\"><\/span>Manifestations of dental injuries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Dental injuries<\/strong> manifest themselves in several ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>damage to the visible part of the tooth (enamel and crown);<\/li>\n<li>damage to the internal parts (dentin, pulp, root, and alveolar bone);<\/li>\n<li>tooth displacement;<\/li>\n<li>avulsion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cracks and fractures<\/strong> (breaks) of the crown are the most common <strong>dental injuries<\/strong>. In addition to the crown, a fracture can also affect the tooth root, either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.<\/p>\n<p>A fracture can occur not only due to the effect of a strong direct force (impact), but also due to biting extremely hard food (almonds, fruit pits, walnut\/hazelnut shells, unpopped popcorn kernels, bones) or objects (bottle caps, a small stone accidentally found in salad, and similar items).<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <strong>displacement<\/strong>, the tooth can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>loosened (it moves and bleeds);<\/li>\n<li>partially extruded (positioned above the level of the other teeth);<\/li>\n<li>laterally displaced, with the alveolar bone also being injured;<\/li>\n<li>pushed into the bone (positioned below the level of the other teeth);<\/li>\n<li>completely knocked out (avulsed).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/immediate-implant-placement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Immediate implant placement \u2013 A guide through the procedure &gt;&gt;<\/strong><\/a><\/pre>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tooth_avulsion_%E2%80%93_An_example_of_treatment_from_our_clinical_practice\"><\/span>Tooth avulsion \u2013 An example of treatment from our clinical practice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Tooth avulsion<\/strong> refers to the traumatic displacement of a tooth from its socket.<\/p>\n<p>When this type of injury occurs, it is necessary to act calmly and quickly: immediately find the knocked-out tooth, place it in lukewarm salt water or milk, and visit a <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/our-team\/dr-ljubica-veselinovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>dentist<\/strong><\/a> within the first one to two hours.<\/p>\n<p>If conditions do not allow the tooth to be placed in liquid, the patient can transport it in their mouth (under the tongue) or wrap it in a moist tissue or hydrophilic cotton.<\/p>\n<p>If the tooth is dirty, do not clean it with chemical substances. Instead, gently rinse it only with cold water.
