During this procedure, the dentist removes a thin layer of enamel to create space for future crowns. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, which makes it generally painless.<\/p>\n<p>It is very important that the teeth supporting the dental bridge are healthy or properly treated, with sufficiently strong roots and good bone support (jawbone with adequate density). If significant damage or infections exist, dentists must treat them beforehand. The choice depends on several factors: the number of missing teeth, their position, the condition of neighbouring teeth, the <a href=\"https:\/\/drveselinovic.com\/en\/dental-interventions\/oral-surgery\/jawbone-augmentation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>amount of jawbone<\/strong><\/a> and the patient\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n<p>The most common types include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>traditional (conventional) bridge<\/strong> \u2013 supported by natural teeth on both sides of the edentulous space;<\/li>\n<li><strong>cantilever bridge<\/strong> \u2013 supported only on one side;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maryland bridge<\/strong> \u2013 a minimally invasive type of bridge used mainly for the anterior dental region;<\/li>\n<li><strong>implant-supported bridge<\/strong> \u2013 fixed on previously placed dental implants instead of natural teeth;<\/li>\n<li><strong>All-on-4<\/strong> and <strong>All-on-6<\/strong> systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Traditional_bridge\"><\/span>Traditional bridge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A traditional bridge is supported on both sides by natural abutment teeth located next to the missing tooth area. To allow the teeth to support the crowns that hold the bridge, dentists need to prepare and grind them.<\/p>\n<p>This type of bridge usually consists of three or more crowns physically connected into one unit. The connection between the crowns is not aesthetically visible, so they look like individual teeth.<\/p>\n<p>This type of bridge provides long-term stability. Dentists most often fabricate it because of its high functionality, aesthetics and affordability. It is suitable for both anterior and posterior teeth.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cantilever_bridge\"><\/span>Cantilever bridge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A cantilever bridge is specific because it relies on a supporting tooth only on one side, while the other side has no support.<\/p>\n<p>A condition for making this type of bridge is the presence of two neighbouring abutment teeth that replace one missing tooth. The supporting teeth must be positioned behind the missing tooth in the dental arch.<\/p>\n<p>The fabrication of this bridge is limited, and it has significantly lower resistance compared to a traditional dental bridge.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maryland_bridge\"><\/span>Maryland bridge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A Maryland bridge can replace only one missing tooth, mainly in the front areas of the jaws. It uses extensions (metal or ceramic wings) that attach to the back surfaces of neighbouring teeth.<\/p>\n<p>The main advantage of this system is that it requires little or no grinding of healthy teeth (a minimally invasive method). It also provides excellent aesthetics and faster fabrication compared to a traditional dental bridge.<\/p>\n<p>However, dentists rarely fabricate Maryland bridges because they have limited strength.
